Cassy Polimeni reads from her junior fiction novel ‘Ella and the Call of The Wild’, illustrated by Hykie Breeze, book #4 in the ‘Ella and The Frogs’ series.
About Cassy Polimeni
When Cassy Polimeni was a kid, she used to sneak out of grown up gatherings to read up her favourite tree, and she has been escaping into stories and nature ever since.
She is the author of the award-winning Ella and the Frogs series (winner of the Environment Award for Children’s Literature and the Novel Insight Reviewer’s Choice Award and longlisted for CBCA’s Book of the Year for Younger Readers), The World From Here and CBCA Notable picture book, The Garden at the End of the World.
A former travel magazine editor, she has also worked as a bookseller, publishing assistant, airport chauffeur and an English teacher at Italian summer camps. She lives with her family on Bunurong Country.
About Hykie Breeze
Hykie Kwong Breeze is a Hong Kong born graphic designer and illustrator living in Sydney (Dharawal country), Australia. After several years working in marketing, events and program management, Hykie decided to switch careers and went back to student (and hospo) life to become a designer.
In her commercial design work, Hykie previously worked with the Medical Association of the University of Notre Dame, Canon, Australia Council for the Arts, the Primary English Teaching Association of Australia (PETAA), CommBank (CBA) and ALDI Supermarkets.
After building a foundation in communications design, Hykie decided to take a leap of faith and pursue illustration. She is drawn to children’s books because she wouldn’t be the bookworm she is today if she didn’t have access to wonderful literature as a kid herself, and because she believes all kids need to see themselves and others in the books they read. Hykie is the illustrator of the Ella and the Frogs series written by Cassy Polimeni.
When not working, Hykie enjoys reading books by diverse creators, exploring the local national park and chasing after her two rescue cats.
About ‘Ella and the Call of the Wild’
Did you know every frog species has its own call? It helps them find each other in the wild. Mostly they sing love songs to find friends or partners. Sometimes they use their voice as a warning…
Ella’s class is getting pen pals! They will be writing to kids at a rainforest school on the other side of the country. Everyone is excited except for Ella, who finds herself lost for words. What do you say to someone you have never met?
But Ella soon discovers she and her pen pal are connected by more than just letters. A creature they both care about needs their help!
